Day trips
One of the reasons we love Lake Garda so much is there’s always somewhere new to explore. From colourful cities and historic streets to the breathtaking views of the Dolomites. Some of northern Italy’s most incredible destinations can be visited in a day.

Verona
35 min drive
If you fancy swapping lakeside views for colourful streets, beautiful architecture and a little bit of history, Verona is an easy addition to your Lake Garda itinerary.
Famous as the setting of Romeo and Juliet, you can wander through the historic centre, visit Juliet's balcony and explore the beautiful Piazza delle Erbe. And with it being one of the closest cities to the southern end of Lake Garda, it's an easy option if you fancy a change of scenery without spending hours in the car.
Tip: If you want a view of Juliet's Balcony without just battling the crowds below, pop into Il Tiramisù di Giulietta. You can pick up a tiramisu and enjoy a view overlooking the famous balcony at the same time.
Milan
1 hour 30 min drive
For a completely different side of Northern Italy, Milan makes a great day trip from Lake Garda. Think beautiful architecture, bustling streets, incredible food and, of course, plenty of shopping.
The Duomo is probably the star of the show and definitely worth seeing, but there’s plenty more to explore if you have a full day. Wander through the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, explore the impressive Sforzesco Castle or let the kids run off some energy in Parco Sempione.
It’s a bit further than Verona, but still an easy day trip if you fancy experiencing one of Italy’s most iconic cities.
The Dolomites

My personal favourite.
The Dolomites are a little further from Lake Garda, but honestly, the drive alone is part of the experience. The scenery just gets more and more incredible the further into the mountains you go, not going to lie, I actually had tears in my eyes the first time we drove through.
If you have the time, I'd personally recommend staying for longer than a day. There is so much to explore, and I don't think one day really does the Dolomites justice. But if Lake Garda is your base and you've only got a day to spare, Lake Carezza would be my pick and you don’t have to go too far to see it.
Known for its incredible turquoise water and the dramatic mountain backdrop reflected across the lake, it's one of those views that makes the drive completely worth it. There's an easy, family-friendly walk around the lake too, so you don't need to be a serious hiker to enjoy it.

Venice
1 hour 30 min drive
Venice is one of those places that I think you should see at least once. It’s completely different to anywhere else and, even though we knew it probably wasn't somewhere we'd choose to spend an entire family holiday, a day trip felt like the perfect way for us to experience it.
I will say, though, I probably wouldn't recommend attempting it with a toddler in a stroller unless you're prepared for a bit of a workout. We did it when Lily was little and, with all the bridges and steps, it was hard work.
That said, I'm really glad we went. Venice is one of those places that feels worth ticking off your list, especially if you're already staying at Lake Garda and don't think you'd dedicate a whole trip to it.
Would I rush back with a young child? Probably not. But I can imagine visiting as a couple and having the time to slowly wander the little streets, get lost around the canals and just soak it all in would be absolutely beautiful.
